Afternoon Activities

Afternoons are always busy, but they don’t always look the same. By the time we get to this part of the day, everyone has a different level of energy. Some are ready to run around and play, while others are already getting tired and a little more emotional. It can go either way depending on the day.

Some days we go to the park. The kids run around, climb, and burn off whatever energy they have left. I usually sit and watch, keeping an eye on everyone, while finally getting a moment to slow down. It’s one of the only times during the day when I’m not constantly moving. Even then, I’m still watching, still listening, making sure everyone is okay. But it’s a different kind of busy now, where I can at least breathe for a minute.

Other days, we stay home. That’s when I have to get a little creative. Crafts come out, toys get rotated, and I try to keep everyone entertained long enough to avoid complete chaos. Sometimes it works, and they’ll play together without any problems. Other times, it turns into arguing over toys or someone getting upset over something small that suddenly feels like a big deal.

There’s always noise. Laughing one minute, arguing the next. Someone crying, someone else trying to fix it, and me in the middle trying to keep things from getting out of hand. It’s constant movement and energy, and it rarely slows down.

Afternoons can feel long, especially on days when everyone is tired but not quite ready to settle down. Those are the harder days, when patience runs thin, and everything feels a little more overwhelming.

But this is also when I see the best parts of them. The way they play together, the little things that make them laugh, and the moments where they show kindness without even thinking about it. Even in the chaos, some moments stand out, small, simple moments that remind me why this time matters so much.
